Choose Life

category: christian living Jan 10, 2024

Do you remember how you felt in school when there was a test, but the teacher added that it was an open book test? The feeling of relief would overcome the terror of the test itself. Better yet, was when there was some kind of mistake on one of the problems and the teacher would give the answer to that problem! I remember thinking, “well, I know that I at least got one right!”

In life it seems that we are in one test after another. We make choices everyday from what we will wear and eat to more hefty decisions at work or concerning a loved one. Although some choices don’t seem to matter much, there are a lot of decisions made that have a big impact on ourselves and those we come in contact with.

In Deuteronomy 30, God spoke to the children of Israel about making decisions. In verse 19 it reads, “I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.” What he is saying here is that because sin entered the world, death and destruction accompanied it. We are then faced with choices on a daily basis to either side with sin - which leads to destruction or side with life that will lead to more blessings in your life. God even helps us out here. He pretty much says, “Ok people, listen up. There are a lot of things that you could choose to do but not all your choices will be beneficial for you. So, here is your open book test and I will even give you the answer - CHOOSE LIFE!”

Verse 20 goes on to tell us what choosing life looks like. It reads, “that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days..” It doesn’t get any easier than that. Cling to God and choose life today!
